The word Hmong refers to an ethnic group with a distinct culture, language, and history. The Hmong are an Indigenous people originally from the mountainous regions of China, Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand. Today, large Hmong communities also thrive around the world, particularly in the United States, France, Australia, and other countries where families resettled after the Vietnam War era.
For the Hmong, the term is more than just an ethnic label—it is an identity rooted in traditions, values, and resilience. Hmong culture emphasizes family, community, respect for elders, and a close relationship with nature. Traditional practices such as textile embroidery (paj ntaub), shamanism, and clan-based social structures remain important to many families.
Spiritual life is an important part of what it means to be Hmong, and it often exists in two main traditions:
Hmong Shamanism: A traditional spiritual practice that centers on the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds. Shamans (txiv neeb) serve as healers and guides, performing rituals to restore balance, heal illness, and protect families from spiritual harm. Shamanism is deeply tied to Hmong cosmology and ancestral beliefs, and it remains widely practiced today.
Hmong Christianity: Since the mid-20th century, many Hmong have embraced Christianity, particularly Protestant and Catholic faiths. This shift often came through missionary work and the experiences of Hmong families during and after the Vietnam War. Today, Christian churches serve as both spiritual homes and community centers, offering a different but equally significant expression of Hmong identity.
The Hmong language belongs to the Hmong-Mien language family and includes several dialects, the two most widely spoken being Hmong White (Hmoob Dawb) and Hmong Green (Moob Leeg). Both are spoken in Hmong communities around the world and serve as a way to preserve identity and heritage.
Today, the Hmong continue to balance tradition with modern life. Many younger generations embrace both their cultural roots and the opportunities of global citizenship, making “Hmong” a living, evolving identity. In short, Hmong means more than ethnicity—it is a people, a language, a culture, and a story of resilience and pride.
